Women Re-Entering The Workforce

posted in: Latest News | 0

Having been in research recruitment for a long time and seen many changes over the years there is still one hurdle that still exists in many companies, that is the acceptance to take on mums who want to work part time / contract.

I have heard all the excuses, yet still believe there is huge value to re-engage with the mums and provide the flexibility they need in the workforce.

As an industry we are losing valuable talent mainly seniors who just give up trying to re-enter due to the negative reactions or pressure to go into full time employment.

It is time to re-think and come up with solutions that can work for everyone its not that hard. Corporations seem more open and willing to adapt, where I see most resistance is with research agencies and the thought that the clients will arc up.

Nothing is further from the truth if you have 2 seniors servicing a couple of accounts working 3 day each and the client is aware up front there should be no issues as someone is always on hand during the week to attend to their needs.

The bonus is that seniors working part time /contract are more inclined to be self sufficient and disciplined to get the work done.

Where to after 65-67?

A question I am sure many heading in this direction will be pondering as I have. In today’s modern fast paced Corporate environment maybe the real question should be where to after 50? I’ve found most people I talk to at 50 don’t have a clear vision for their future for them it’s all about in the now.

The reality is we may have longer to live than any other generation before us. Some of you may ask should I keep working past 65/ 67 and for some SME’s owners this may be possible depending on their businesses but for most in the Corporate sector we have a use by date.

Unfortunately, this may be sooner than we think as restructures are occurring more frequently, downsizing continues in middle management, technology taking over some of our tasks and some employers not feeling the love for holding onto or hiring older employees.

One hope for some, is that they secure a retrenchment package or cash in on their long service leave to assist with the transition to their next phase of life. But what happens if that does not occur, if we were to suddenly find ourselves out of the workforce tomorrow we could feel a real sense of loss and belonging which could result in depression, anxiety or fear of the future for some of us.

I believe if you need to make time and plan as early as 50 so you can adapt to sudden changes in your circumstance more readily.

Ask yourself – What would I do with all this free time; How would I cope without having my work routine; What interests outside of work do I have currently; Will I need to find another job; How long will my finances last; Can I create an new income stream. These are just some questions that need answering.

Your Future

Your Future – Where do you see it?

We all have read articles about the future of market research and where it may end up. More importantly where do you want to end up! Most young people I speak with have a vision of working for themselves one day not many seem to want a career within an organisation or what we use to term climbing the corporate ladder.

Why is that?
Are companies not providing you with the stretch you need? Is it lack of mentoring? Do you seek a more flexible work environment? Do you want to make your own success?

Some of you will succeed I am sure of that, but most will still need an employer so its important to ensure that your clear on the pathway forward to stay engaged and keep learning.

If your unclear on what the next steps are for you, get in touch and we will share our knowledge and experience with you so that your direction is clear.

So all you need to do is contact info@amlresources.com.au or call Andy on 0412 625 764 to organise a coffee/chat easy as that.

What are Employers Looking For ?

Having spoken with some key clients over the past month there seems to be an emphasis on skills and ability followed closely by cultural fit.

Agencies regardless of level want someone who can hit the ground running, who knows their stuff and can demonstrate this in quick time. Clients what someone who has had exposure to their business sector and understands how a business uses market research as just one tool to make decisions.

Interviewing and References

Most companies now will have you undertake a practical test module and or psychometric testing in some form prior to finalising an offer. References whilst still required are more far reaching with clients using LinkedIn and other social media platforms to check you out, so be aware what you put on Facebook or other social media as this could impact their decision to hire you.
